What would be the best way to provide streams (probably 5 max) to family? Is it ideal to setup XUI and then restream them to each? My apologies if this is incredibly basic, I am very much a beginner in iptv and would like to curate the experience for them as much as possible. Thanks

you need to buy someones monthly IPTV service, not create your own service for only 5 people. Unless I'm misunderstanding the question

for this you must have a main source then restreaming server , that will cost more . but you can but a IPTV sub instead and provide .

if you wanted to restream, XUI can do that . but you need to consider the bandwidth , hardware and softwares , secuirty and so on

I want to learn how to do it for a small number of users privately though. Not looking to run a business!

If I were streaming from that IP anyway, would it be insecure to do? I'm really just getting started learning so sorry for the very beginner questions.

If you want to share up to five streams with your family, setting up an IPTV solution can be quite convenient. Here are a few options you can consider, each with its advantages:

Option 1: Using XUI/Xtream Codes Panel

  • XUI/Xtream Codes is a commonly used IPTV management system that allows you to organize and manage streams and restream them. If you want to curate and manage the experience, setting up XUI would give you flexibility.
  • Advantages:
    • Central management of channels.
    • You can create user profiles for each family member and adjust the streams according to their needs.
    • You can manage access permissions and keep track of activity, making it easy to curate a customized viewing experience.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Requires some setup knowledge, including hosting a server and configuring streams properly.
    • You need a stable server with enough resources to handle five concurrent streams.

Option 2: Plex or Emby with IPTV Plugin

  • Plex and Emby are media server platforms that have IPTV plugins available. These plugins allow you to integrate IPTV channels into a familiar, user-friendly interface.
  • Advantages:
    • User-friendly experience, perfect for family members with different levels of technical comfort.
    • Simple to set up for limited streams.
    • Available on multiple devices (smart TVs, tablets, phones, etc.).
  • Disadvantages:
    • Limited live TV management capabilities compared to XUI.
    • You may need a reliable plugin, and sometimes plugins require extra configuration for IPTV.

Option 3: Custom Script & VLC/Player for Restreaming

  • You can use ffmpeg to restream each IPTV channel. You can create a custom solution that uses a Python script to restream the content and make it available to your family members.
  • Advantages:
    • Low cost since you're using open-source tools.
    • Full customization, allowing you to create the exact experience you want.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Not as user-friendly as pre-built platforms.
    • Requires you to manage streaming, bandwidth, and keep everything running smoothly.

Recommended Setup for a Beginner

If you are a beginner in IPTV, setting up XUI and using it to restream might be a good learning experience since it provides a graphical interface to manage streams. You can use it to:

  • Allocate streams to each family member.
  • Limit bandwidth usage.
  • Schedule or prioritize certain channels for certain viewers.
However, if you prefer simplicity, you can start with Plex or Emby, which will give your family a nice user-friendly experience without requiring too much management.

Regardless of the approach, make sure you have a stable server or NAS setup to handle multiple streams, enough bandwidth, and permissions to restream.
