Hi,
someone asked me he needs fast channel zapping time as analog TV?
do you think this is important factor for IPTV?

Thanks

Zapping time is relative to the end user. There are too many variables and inconsistencies with users and iptv providers alike to realistically accomplish those goals.
TLDR, if you want that kind of fasting time then IPTV should be on LOCAL NETWORK, QoS implemented on the network, ONE SINGLE standardized app and device, ohhhhh and MULTICAST.
Basically, for 99% of IPTV providers IT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

Hi,
I checked one telecom carrier using multicast that its zapping time still needs 2 - 3 sec.
It uses private app on stb and local network, it still has black screen.

My friend said why people want to use the slower zapping time of IPTV, not to use analog TV with fastest zapping time.
He said why to spend much money to get the slower TV services.

To my knowledge, Analog TV has been phased out completely. It’s gone Digital pretty much everywhere. Also, Digital TV is still a form of IPTV. It’s simply not delivered the exact same, but at the same time... it is.

I agree @urgodfather, analog platform was phased out way back. Unless you are receiving a digital signal and the moderate locally to analog...

Back to Zapping - another key element is how quick SI (tables) are received and processed by the box. Simple case I handled on multicast, zapping was pathetic - Cause PAT delay. To address, the stb manufacture coded the firmware in a way that it would store all channel info (tables) on its memory instead of waiting from the SI server.
Definitely, this has its own downside. In case the tables change, then the box takes time to pick the new info but normalize after the first boot.

Hi,
We have been developing Ezserver for 20 years that found PAT way is slower than RTMP to HTTP way.
For example same channel from UDP multicast input and RTMP input, then http output, UDP way has delay, RMPT way has no delay.
And we found RTMP to HTTP way can have fastest zapping time.

But you also have to remember the other variables that I’ve mentioned. Most of these are beyond the control of your average iptv provider.

Hi,
Do you want to make a race for channel zapping time for all streaming server at same server?
Let all streaming server vendors join the game.

good one! while it is a good idea, configurations will vary from provider to provider. best race would be controlled environment. example: same size lab. same location. same method for testing zap. same device. same location for "user" connection. same source stream. otherwise, results will vary also.

if someone do decide to make this race, i would be interested to see results.

Hi,
At least 5 years ago, one of our customers did 8 brand servers for channel zapping time test.
Finally he selected us, but I think you are forum owner, this game should be from your hand, it will be fair for all.

i am not forum owner, but yes, my analysis would be unbiased.
