hoping I can get a little insight:
currently I have 1 server that I have xtream ui set up on.

im wanting to put main server in one server farm
live streams in another server farm
Vod in another server farm.

the main server only stores customer info and stream links so does the speed matter with the main server?
what type of specs are needed for the main server for lets say 500 users?

I thought that the Load Balancer needs to have the good bandwidth since that's the one with the actual streams.

if someone can help educate me on this id appreciate it

I have it exactly as you say.

its not recommended to use a VPS , always use Dedicated
i have a question though regarding the structure, how many user would 1gbps comfortably handle?

it is not depends on customer as long it depends more on how much channels you can let them live then say every channel have one client

so you can calculate the needed server bandwidth, like:
total of live Channels x average Channels bandwidth [250 SD Channels x 2 Mbps = 500 Mbps] >> Incoming [bandwidth] Streams
total of your online Clients x average Channels bandwidth [250 x 2 Mbps = 500 Mbps ] >> Outgoing [bandwidth] Streams

Total needed server bandwidth = Incoming [bandwidth] Streams + Outgoing [bandwidth] Streams | 500 in + 500 out = 1 Gbps

neither here, nor there
This has been discussed many times already.

Also, saying 500 users means nothing. 1Gb server NIC means nothing if not guaranteed 1Gbps Up/Down. Here are general assumptions to make ONLY for bandwidth.
* no more than 70% at PEAK (MAX) usage
* 4 mb per stream in and out

Now, you can take that formula and assume 5-10% increase depending on the streams you have loaded to account for the multiple users watching the same stream.

However, that doesn't even account for RAM or CPU. That is JUST bandwidth!!!!

Ive also asked about this prevously and never had an answer as to the benefits of TV archive on a seperate server, I would have thought that having the timeshift on the same channel as the server would be the best option but the diagram above seems to suggest otherwise. My geographic location means that most of my users watch archived TV as opposed to live so if I were to have a single server for the catchup it would soon be out of bandwidth.
