Hi all,
I need server for transcoding about 210 channels from FHD at one time . Does anyone now any cheap solution to do it from one server? What kind of server do I need?

At the moment I ve got old servers with spec like below, but I can transcoding about 30 channels at time.

Spec:
2 x HP Prol G6
2 x Intel Xeon X5675 (SLBYL) 3.06GHz 6-Core LGA1366 12th
128gb ram each
SSD

Hello,

For someone to be able to help you out first please mention which software are you using but I think you are using some software with FFmpeg underneath the hood, in that case please understand that transcoding using CPU is not an easy task because the SW has to decode the stream and then encode it to whatever profile you chose.

I have a server with Dual XEON 8270 platinum server and when I got it new I tested FFmpeg with it and I was able to transcode about 100-120 channels with CPU reaching 90%.

Transcoding is expensive whether you do it with CPU or GPU and needs good hardware.

if electricity and cooling down is not an issue best idea is to buy some old servers like what you have or Dell R610 or 620 and transcode 20-30 channels per each server that way you can have some kind of redundancy by purchasing some extra servers and keeping them as hot standby of running ones. and if electricity and cooling costs are issues then best to get yourself some new servers with high-end CPUs.

I haven't personally tried FFmpeg withRyzen CPUs maybe if someone had tried them with Threadripper or Epyc line up can comment and those could be much cheaper solutions compared to Intel servers.

I hope that helped.

Here is a Guideline what servers you need

Very roughly speaking, for a single full-transcode of a video, the following PassMark score requirements are a good guideline for the following average source file:

4K HDR (50Mbps, 10-bit HEVC) file: 17000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p)
4K SDR (40Mbps, 8-bit HEVC) file: 12000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p)
1080p (10Mbps, H.264) file: 2000 PassMark score
720p (4Mbps, H.264) file: 1500 PassMark score

compile ffmpeg with nvidia gpu which ll help you to transcode around 70 HD channels from one server ( gpu nvidia quadro p 5000 series )
it also depends that you server support these model gpu or not

Thanks for reply. The cheaper solution will be just buy few servers to do that. Electricity and noise it's not the problem.
