Hi All,

This one has been breaking my head for a few days now so I thought I'd look to the forum for help.

Objective - Connect to a remote ubuntu server via SSH and then connect to a VPN server without breaking the SSH connection.

One of the elements I'm finding most bizarre is that after setting up a VPN server I'm able to log onto the VPN server from my local desktop running Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop, but only when I connect via network tools in the GUI settings by importing the config file. When I attempt this from the terminal however the load sequence completes however it kills my internet connection. I thought if I could test that I could successfully connect to the VPN Server from the command line on my local machine then I should also be able to connect from a remote server via SSH (but conscious that there are other initial steps to take on the remote server that are required to reroute the packets so that the SSH connection isn't broken upon connection).

My download speeds are so much faster from my remote server and if content could be downloaded directly onto the server it saves having to FTP content from local machine to remote server, but finding a way to connect the remote server to a VPN is a real pain in the arse. Anyone had any luck with this?

Cheers,

Hello friend, sorry but I didn't understand what you need.
Maybe I can help if I can be clearer.

Hello friend, sorry but I didn't understand what you need.
Maybe I can help if I can be clearer.

I have a remote server that I can connect to via SSH that is running Ubuntu Server 18.04 (server 1).

I also have a second server that is configured as an openVPN server (server 2).

I have FTP'd the client config file from the root directory of server 2 onto server 1 so that server 1 can connect to server 2.

I would then like to SSH into server 1 and install the openvpn client software onto server 1 and connect to the server with the .ovpn client file on server 1 so that is connected to the VPN server hosted on server 2.

If I was able to do that however it would break the SSH connection upon connecting to the VPN server so I need a method of successfully connecting to the VPN server using only the terminal and to also prevent the SSH connection from breaking upon making that connection.

At that point I can then download content onto server 1 while it is behind a VPN if that makes sense?

Cheers

What I'm finding strange is that if I download the client file to my local desktop and run it from the terminal (e.g. sudo openvpn local.ovpn) it runs through the sequence and states Initialization Sequence Completed but then when I attempt to connect to a website I get 'This site can’t be reached the sites server IP address could not be found.
Try:

Checking the proxy, firewall and DNS configuration
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG'

If I use the GUI rather than the terminal to connect via Settings > Network > VPN > +Import from file then my local machine connects to the VPN server and I do not get the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG error however when I load up a webpage?
